What is zakat?
Zakat is the obligatory charity every eligible Muslim pays once a year — one of the five pillars of Islam. It purifies your wealth and channels a share of it to the poor, the needy and other deserving categories. The standard rate is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth.
Who must pay zakat?
Zakat becomes obligatory when three conditions are met: you are an adult Muslim, your zakatable wealth has reached the nisab threshold, and you have held it for one full lunar (hijri) year. Personal-use items — your home, car, furniture and clothes — are never counted.
Nisab explained
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold for zakat. It is defined as 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Because metal prices move daily, the PKR value of nisab changes too. As an approximate guide, with 24K gold around Rs 37,380 per gram in October 2026, the gold nisab was approximately Rs 3,270,000 — clearly an approximation, so check the current gold rate before your final calculation. Many scholars recommend using the lower silver nisab, which brings more people into giving.
How this calculation works
- Add up cash, gold, silver and business assets at current market value.
- Subtract debts and liabilities due within the year.
- If the net figure is at or above nisab, zakat = 2.5% of the net figure.
- If it is below nisab, no zakat is due.
